🌡️ When conventional bearings reach their limits – Miba's patented Eddy Grooves technology steps in. In turbomachinery – compressors, gas turbines, steam turbines – thermal stress on plain bearings is one of the central engineering challenges. In conventional bearings, lubricating oil typically flows in an ordered, laminar pattern, with little mixing between components. This leads to pronounced temperature gradients that, when critical thresholds are exceeded, threaten not only bearing life but the long-term operational safety of the entire machine. Eddy Grooves are precision-engineered structures milled into a defined area of the bearing surface. Their geometry is optimised for each individual bearing, deliberately disrupting the laminar oil flow. The turbulent motion improves heat exchange between cooler oil near the shaft and warmer oil near the bearing surface – resulting in significantly lower maximum oil film and bearing metal temperatures. ⚡ One component. Two functions. A first for powder metallurgy. The R&D team at Miba Sinter Austria in Vorchdorf has developed a sintered copper component that combines electrical conductivity and active water cooling in a single part – used in CCS2 connectors for high-power EV fast-charging systems. The component supports charging power of up to 850 kilowatts, contributing to full charges in well under ten minutes. Achieving this requires a highly complex geometry that benefits directly from the design freedom of powder metallurgy. Lehrjahr hieß es „Wirtschaftlich denken und handeln“: Im Zuge einer Schulung von LOCO+MOTION lernten sie die Herausforderungen in unterschiedlichen beruflichen Positionen kennen. 📈 Um die Themen greifbar zu machen, simulierten die Lehrlinge die Gründung einer Firma und übernahmen dabei spannende Rollen: von der Geschäftsführung über die Marketing-Abteilung bis hin zum Verkaufsteam. Trotz ungleicher Ziele mussten die Lehrlinge gutes Teamwork beweisen. 🤝 „Das ultimative Ziel, eine Domino-Kettenreaktion aufzubauen, wurde in der vorgegebenen Zeit erfüllt und hat uns alle ordentlich ins Schwitzen gebracht“, erzählt Magdalena. Understanding damage mechanisms in #hydrodynamic bearings🔍 Our colleague Gunther Hager from Miba Gleitlager Austria spoke at the VDI Wissensforum GmbH conference “𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗻”(Damage Mechanisms in Bearings) in Aachen, which is still ongoing today. In his technical presentation, Gunther showed how damage mechanisms in hydrodynamic bearings can be reliably analyzed by linking simulation, test‑rig performance data and real operating conditions. 🖥️🔗⚙️ 𝗔 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁: validating simulation tools with test bench data and using advanced sensor technology to better interpret results and transfer insights to different applications. 🎯 👉 A strong reminder that only reality‑based validation enables robust bearing design and long service life. In my role as Vice President of the Federation of Austrian Industries (Industriellenvereinigung), I was very honored to welcome Jake Sullivan – the former US National Security Advisor under President Joe Biden – to Vienna yesterday. As part of the event series "Impulse vom Schwarzenbergplatz", we discussed with him how #Europe can secure and strengthen its global role and influence as well as its #competitiveness against the backdrop of current #geopolitical developments. Jake Sullivan underlined that we are in a phase of intense strategic competition. Now, it is being decided who will take the lead in key technologies such as #ai and #semiconductors , and thus will shape the rules of the international order. This competition is also economic and technological, not only #military . He also pointed out how important it is to rely on strong #alliances . For Europe, this means that we should not only strengthen our technological and economical position, but also act as an active player in geopolitics. In my opening address, I pointed out that Europe has defined security too narrowly and primarily in economic terms for too long. The current geopolitical developments clearly show that economic, technological and military #resilience must be considered together. Therefore, Europe must redefine its role in the world with an active foreign policy that takes economic strength, security of supply and geopolitical interests equally into account. This also includes the protection of strategically relevant technologies and infrastructures. The “Impulse vom Schwarzenbergplatz” event series aims to discuss highly relevant topics with high-ranking personalities from around the world. Previously, the former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the former Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin had been our guests. Neben meiner Arbeit in einem Industriebetrieb konnte ich auch meine Spanischkenntnisse durch einen Kurs verbessern. Besonders spannend war zu sehen, wie vor Ort gearbeitet und Fachwissen angewendet wird. Auch außerhalb der Arbeit habe ich viel erlebt und Sevilla, Málaga sowie Marbella erkundet. It was particularly exciting to see how people work on-site and apply their expertise. Outside of work, I also had many experiences and explored Seville, Málaga, and Marbella. The new CD Laboratory at Technische Universität Graz develops scientifically sound methods that help shape the 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆‑𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀. And to ensure research findings can be translated quickly into industrial practice. 🎓🧠 ➡️⚙️🚅 The work focuses on two key areas, and we're happy that Miba Frictec GmbH is partner of the research team for #structuralintegrity of components and systems, with a strong emphasis on #brakedynamics and #friction ‑inducedvibrations. This is supported by advanced simulations and testing on TU Graz’s state‑of‑the‑art brake test rig. The team will also dive deeper into fatigue and wear mechanisms in wheel–rail contact and friction braking systems, using realistic testing on a dedicated roller test rig.
