How can Wide Band Gap technologies push the boundaries of RF performance? At the Chips from the North – Technical Workshop in Helsinki, experts from across the Chips Joint Undertaking ecosystem explored how Europe’s pilot lines are bringing cutting-edge semiconductor innovation closer to industry. One key topic: RF MEMS devices enabled by Wide Band Gap (WBG) platforms. At SAL, this work is part of our WBG pilot line, focusing on high-performance and reliable RF components — a key enabler for next-generation electronic systems. 💡 Why it matters: WBG technologies offer significant advantages in efficiency, power handling, and robustness — opening up new possibilities for advanced RF applications. This work was presented at the workshop by Humberto Campanella , highlighting the motivation, value proposition, and current progress of RF MEMS development at SAL. A new milestone for innovation in Austria 🚀 Yesterday, SAL officially opened its new Validation Lab in Graz – a state-of-the-art facility for testing electronic systems under extreme and real-world conditions. We were delighted to welcome numerous guests from research and industry to the opening – thank you all for joining us and making this milestone so special. During guided lab tours, visitors gained first-hand insights into the 275 m² facility, including its advanced testing infrastructure and demonstrators. We also had the pleasure of hearing industry perspectives through two testimonials – thank you to Mario Gschwandl ( Ottronic ) and Michael Zweimüller ( Aerospace Team Graz ) for sharing your experiences and insights. How can lead-free piezoMEMS for actuator applications be further improved in quality and sustainability? From March 24–26, 2025, Marco Deluca , Head of Research Unit Thin Film Technologies at SAL, participated in the Novel High-k Application Workshop in Dresden. Organized by NaMLab , the workshop brought together more than 100 participants from industry, research institutes and universities to exchange ideas and discuss recent experimental results on devices, process technology, reliability and characterization of high-k dielectrics in silicon-based micro- and nanoelectronics.
