Innovation doesn't happen behind closed doors. It happens through collaboration. At ISTA - International Safe Transit Association Europe 2026, our Packaging Innovation Scale Manager, Caroline Janson , shared how strong partnerships help turn ideas into scalable solutions. With PPWR deadlines approaching, collaboration across the value chain is more important than ever. Material suppliers, machine builders, converters and brand owners all have a role to play in redesigning packaging for the future. Using our Ad/Vantage TrayWrap as an example, Caroline highlighted how working closely with Meurer Verpackungssysteme GmbH helped us develop a paper-based coffee multipack wrapping solution that neither company could have achieved alone. The message was clear: successful innovation takes time. Material trials, machine adaptations and scale-up are all part of the journey. With 2030 fast approaching, the best time to start is now. Nestled in the heart of Hinton, Alberta, the Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage welcomed a new addition to its exhibits this summer: a detailed, scale replica of the Hinton Pulpmill. Housed in the original 1911 train station, the museum shares stories of the land, the people, and the industries that helped shape our community. Sustainable forest management is a systems challenge. Forests are expected to support biodiversity, climate resilience, renewable wood supply and a range of other functions. How those objectives are combined depends on the landscape, the species and habitats present, ownership structures, economic environment, and the way forests have been managed over time. The new Productive and Biodiverse study, developed through Teaming Up 4 Forests , the science-business platform we support in partnership with IUFRO - International Union of Forest Research Organizations , brings together research on these questions. One conclusion is particularly clear: there is no single model for productive and biodiverse forestry. Different areas can play different roles. Protected forests, production forests and biodiversity measures within managed forests can all contribute, provided they are considered as parts of the same wider landscape. For the forest-based bioeconomy, that means long-term access to renewable wood depends on informed, context-specific forest management grounded in strong scientific evidence. It also underlines why close collaboration matters. Science can deepen our understanding of forest systems; businesses bring practical experience from managing supply chains and using renewable materials; and policymakers help create the conditions for those approaches to work in practice. A major step forward for sustainable packaging just went live in Hamburg. Last week we’ve joined the opening of traceless materials ’ first industrial production facility that marks a critical step in turning material innovation into real-world impact. It was fantastic to be part of the opening ceremony and celebrate this important milestone together with everyone involved. In close collaboration with traceless, we are developing a plant-based, fossil free alternative from agricultural by-products that helps reduce plastic use and supports more circular packaging systems. We believe partnerships are key to scaling sustainable solutions and our collaboration with traceless is a strong example of how innovation can move from idea to industrial application. Congratulations to Anne Lamp , Sina Spingler , Jakob Röskamp and the entire traceless team as well as our colleagues Marko Bill Schuster , Hendrik Benecke and Falk Paulsen on reaching this milestone. Exploring science in action at Hinton 🌲🔬 Around 40 chemistry students from the The University of British Columbia , Vancouver had the chance to step inside Hinton’s pulp operations. From wood chips to finished unbleached Kraft pulp, the visit showed the full journey of sustainable production. The exchange was more than a mill tour, it was an opportunity to share expertise, fuel curiosity, and connect with the next generation of bright minds shaping the future of the pulp & paper industry.
