Natural gas plays a key role in the energy transition and the Neptun Deep project is an excellent example of our strategic implementation. Led by OMV Petrom and S.N.G.N. Romgaz S.A. , this initiative is the EU’s largest natural gas project. It is set to strengthen Romania’s energy security, generate an estimated EUR 20 billion in state revenues over its lifetime, and deliver up to 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually at plateau production. With first gas expected in 2027, Neptun Deep is one of the most ambitious energy ventures in the Black Sea, bringing innovation and new energy sources to the region.

What makes a sector "hard to abate"? For many heavy industries, decarbonization is a significant challenge. Emissions often come not just from energy use, but from the production processes themselves. In many cases, low-carbon alternatives simply don’t exist yet. That’s where Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) comes in: this technology captures unavoidable CO₂ emissions at the source and stores them safely, preventing them from entering the atmosphere. At #OMV, we’re proud to champion CCS in Norway through a joint agreement that will help save over 5 million metric tons of CO₂ from the North Sea every year. Austrian Finance Minister Dr. Markus Marterbauer joined us together with #OMV CFO Reinhard Florey at Vienna’s first deep geothermal facility in Aspern. Thanks to our subsurface expertise and years of exploration, we’re proud to lead the underground operations for this project. From early seismic surveys to producing hot formation water in 2021, and forming the deeep joint venture with Wien Energie GmbH in 2023, we’ve reached a major milestone: drilling for the Hydros Seestadt project is now complete. Next up are water production tests and a loop test this fall to assess system performance. This project is a key step toward Vienna’s 2040 climate goals, demonstrating how deep #geothermal #energy can decarbonize district heating in Vienna and beyond.
