The latest innovations in the chemical industry are driven by the combination of plant technology and digitalization. For example, the virtual commissioning of a new large production facility using a digital twin. A team of WACKER experts made this happened and were therefore honored with the Alexander Wacker Innovation Award. Thanks to their outstanding work, we will opening our new cleaning line for semiconductor-grade silicon in Burghausen in July. A virtual model of the new plant enabled all the IT systems and components to be tested in advance. This meant that problems in the interplay between hardware and software could be identified and rectified before the actual facility was even built and this, in turn, expedited the commissioning of the real system by several months. At temperatures of 1800°C, quartz is reduced to metallurgic silicon in furnaces at our production facility in Holla, Norway. Thanks to a team of dedicated colleagues, an artificial intelligence-based technology has been developed that has raised our furnaces to a new level of productivity. They called it “SILICON EYE” and were selected as recipients of WACKER’s highest honor, the Alexander Wacker Innovation Award, for their achievement. The Covid Pandemic has taught us one important lesson: Preparedness is everything! Today marks the first anniversary since WACKER officially achieved “pandemic readiness” in Germany. This means that, since 2024, we have been in the position to produce 80 million mRNA vaccine doses annually together with our partner Corden Pharma - A Full-Service CDMO – if required. Reaching this milestone was no easy feat. WACKER erected its new mRNA Competence Center in record time, within just two years of the groundbreaking in July 2022. This Competence Center boasts innovative planning and design approaches. One of them, the so-called “ballroom concept”, allows us to quickly adapt the facilities to a range of specifications put forward by potential customers. WACKER commissions new plants for specialty silicones in China 🔹Additional facilities increase WACKER’s supply capacity of silicone fluids, silicone emulsions and elastomer gels in China 🔹WACKER continues its successful “in China for China” strategy with this expansion 🔹Board member Dr. Christian Kirsten : “Increasing production capacities will help us grow our specialties business and secure our market position as a leading manufacturer of silicones in China.” Responding to rising demand for high-quality specialty silicones in China, we expanded our production capacities at our Zhangjiagang site. Going forward, the new production complex will manufacture silicone fluids, silicone emulsions and silicone elastomer gels. Production is to be ramped up over the coming months. “Our investment here in Zhangjiagang shows that we are committed to our successful ‘in China for China’ strategy, even in economically challenging times”, Executive Board member Christian Kirsten said at the ceremony marking the completion of the production complex. “By expanding our silicone capacities in Zhangjiagang, we are able to strengthen our specialties business. This secures our market position as a leading manufacturer of silicones in China”, he pointed out. The project is the largest single investment in the site’s 15-year history. “The expansion shows that we are determined to always stay ahead of market trends and to meet diverse consumer needs,” explained Alvin Hu Hu, President of WACKER Greater China, during the ceremony. “This is a strategic investment in the future. By increasing our production capacities, we can support growth in China over the long term. What is more, we are now able to support our customers’ product innovations and respond more quickly to current market requirements.” The products manufactured in the new facilities include high-purity functional and non-functional silicone fluids as well as silicone emulsions. Selected production lines will also comply with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing, creating products that can be used in the cosmetics industries. Another new development in Zhangjiagang is the production of silicone elastomer gels, up to now only manufactured in Germany and in India. The Covid Pandemic has taught us one important lesson: Preparedness is everything! Today marks the first anniversary since WACKER officially achieved “pandemic readiness” in Germany. This means that, since 2024, we have been in the position to produce 80 million mRNA vaccine doses annually together with our partner Corden Pharma - A Full-Service CDMO – if required. Reaching this milestone was no easy feat. WACKER erected its new mRNA Competence Center in record time, within just two years of the groundbreaking in July 2022. This Competence Center boasts innovative planning and design approaches. One of them, the so-called “ballroom concept”, allows us to quickly adapt the facilities to a range of specifications put forward by potential customers. WACKER commissions new plants for specialty silicones in China 🔹Additional facilities increase WACKER’s supply capacity of silicone fluids, silicone emulsions and elastomer gels in China 🔹WACKER continues its successful “in China for China” strategy with this expansion 🔹Board member Dr. Christian Kirsten : “Increasing production capacities will help us grow our specialties business and secure our market position as a leading manufacturer of silicones in China.” Responding to rising demand for high-quality specialty silicones in China, we expanded our production capacities at our Zhangjiagang site. Going forward, the new production complex will manufacture silicone fluids, silicone emulsions and silicone elastomer gels. Production is to be ramped up over the coming months. “Our investment here in Zhangjiagang shows that we are committed to our successful ‘in China for China’ strategy, even in economically challenging times”, Executive Board member Christian Kirsten said at the ceremony marking the completion of the production complex. “By expanding our silicone capacities in Zhangjiagang, we are able to strengthen our specialties business. This secures our market position as a leading manufacturer of silicones in China”, he pointed out. The project is the largest single investment in the site’s 15-year history. “The expansion shows that we are determined to always stay ahead of market trends and to meet diverse consumer needs,” explained Alvin Hu Hu, President of WACKER Greater China, during the ceremony. “This is a strategic investment in the future. By increasing our production capacities, we can support growth in China over the long term. What is more, we are now able to support our customers’ product innovations and respond more quickly to current market requirements.” The products manufactured in the new facilities include high-purity functional and non-functional silicone fluids as well as silicone emulsions. Selected production lines will also comply with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing, creating products that can be used in the cosmetics industries. Another new development in Zhangjiagang is the production of silicone elastomer gels, up to now only manufactured in Germany and in India. Large tiles installed on uneven surfaces are prone to poor adhesion and lippage issues. Therefore, as the demand for large tiles grows, so does the need for flat and level floors. Self-leveling compounds (SLC) provide an excellent solution to meet this need economically and quickly: the liquid cementitious mortar flows over the uneven substrate, creating a flat and level surface as it cures. 🎬 In a new video, Nicole Prizer , chemist at the WACKER US headquarters for polymer binders in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, explains what is important with this type of subfloor – both in the liquid and cured state.
